How Parents Define Their Children's Opinions

Yesterday, my children watched a short video about NFL rivalries. One of the rivalries just happened to be Cowboys vs San Francisco 49'ers. My children immediately started booing the Cowboys even though they've never watched a football game (unless going to a Little League Football game counts). Although we aren't big sports enthusiasts, my husband and I do not care for the Cowboys and we voice that opinion enough (especially since they're in our backyard to speak of)!

It really got me thinking about us parents and how our opinions rub off on our children. They automatically didn't like a team because we don't like it.

So I ask the question - Why? Why do you have that political view, or why do you like a certain team. And if someone says they don't like something, do you check it out first or do you take their word for it and form the same opinion.

One problem with our country is that many follow blindly just because their parents, teachers, friends, or someone they look up to and admire are going a certain direction. There are many generations of Democrats / Republicans just because their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were Democrat / Republican. Whatever happened to thinking for yourself?

Just rambling I know, but it's what I've been thinking about.

  1. Shirley, I really like the comment above. I believe our world would not be in the shape it is, if we really thought before we form opinions or vote for our politicians!!
    Happy parenting!

  2. This is a great thought and one that should make us shudder. We have a power over our children that can be used for the glory of God, but can also be abused. We have to be certain why we believe what we believe and pass that understanding onto our children. If we just mindlessly believe something, they will someday see right through it. WHOA!
Thanks for stopping by the blog and for giving me something to think about this evening!
